August 7, 2006 - SAN FRANCISCO -- Apple announced at the Worldwide
Developers Conference this morning that the transition of its systems to
Intel processors is complete following the unveiling of the Mac Pro and
Intel-powered Xserves. The company also showed off new features of the
next version of Mac OS X, Leopard.

>From live.macnn.com so far:

8) Mail. Apple's bundled email client is getting many new features: To-Do
lists (automatic creation from email), notes, and HTML-based templates
(stationary). Users can easily create and mange To-Do's via system-wide
service that can be integrated with other applications and is already
integrated with Apple's iCal. Easy to create a "To-Do" item in Mail.app.
[08/07
11:07am]

7) Universal Access improved with better VoiceOver technology for
natural-sounding text-to-speech voices, closed captioning support in
QuickTime, Braille support, and more. Enabling all users to access all
features. [08/07 11:02am]

6) Core Animation allows developers to easily create animations.
Developers can specify start, goal, and any keyframes. Leopard will take
care of the rest. "Scenes" can be created using layers of video, text,
images, and OpenGL-enabled content. [08/07 10:58am]

5) Spotlight Improvements. Can search your Mac and others for information,
if you have permission. It also adds new advanced search functions
(boolean, file type, etc.) and also adds a launcher for applications.
[08/07 10:55am]

4) "Spaces" . New virtual desktops feature to allow users to manage
different environments. Users can group different applications to easily
switch and work on different projects. [08/07 10:53am]
Jobs talks about the history of Mac OS X and major releases since launch
in 2001. Apple touts 3,000 applications in just 210 days. Apple will show
off Leopard, but not the secret features, so Redmond doesn't start its
photocopiers too early. Apple lists top Leopard features: 1) 64-bit
computing along with 32-bit legacy support without emulation; 2) Time
Machine helps keep versions/backup of data. It
automatically/transparently backups data allowing users to restore entire
drive or specific documents from a specific date/time using visual
navigation based on a timeline It automatically configures any attached
drives for support and supports music, photos, documents, etc. for
easy/painless backup and restoral (if necessary). [08/07
10:43am]

Apple debuts the new Intel-based Xserve, which Apple says is 5x faster
than previous generation Xserves. Features a smaller processor, less
cooling due to power efficient ships, redundant power supplies, and up to
2TB of storage. Pricing starts at $3000 (standard config is 1GB RAM/80GB
drive/dual-dual-core 2.66GHz chips), about $300 cheaper than comparable
Dell server. Apple will also offer 1 million BTO configurations. It will
ship in October. [08/07 10:28am]

The Intel transition was 210 days to complete--faster than anybody else.
[08/07 10:20am]

Apple will ship single base configuration for $2499 (dual-dual2.6GHz/256MB
VRAM/1GB/SuperDrive)..."Millions" of other configurations via BTO. Now
shipping. Up to dual dual-core 3GHz, 16GB of RAM, 2TB of storage, and ATI
Graphics graphics x1900 or Nvidia FX4500 [08/07 10:46am]

The inside, however, has been totally redone [08/07 10:15am]

Can store up t 2TB (4x500GB) of information due to larger space for drives
because machines require less cooling. [08/07 10:15am]

As expected, the case design stays relatively the same (cept for second
optical slot) [08/07 10:14am]

A total of 2 TB of storage possible. Second optical drive, 4 PCI Express
slots, double-wide graphics slot. [08/07 10:14am]

the 128-bit vector engine replaces "AltiVec"/Velocity [08/07 10:13am]

The Mac Pro has space for 4 hard disks because it requires less cooling
than the G5-based PowerMac [08/07 10:13am]

Real-world speed increase for average everyday apps about 200% faster
[08/07 10:13am]

The Mac Pro is 1.6- 2.1 times faster than Power Mac G5 Quad [08/07 10:12am]

The Mac Pro is being compared to the G5 [08/07 10:11am]

The Mac Pro and Woodcrest chips have tremendous performance per watt ratio
[08/07 10:10am]

3GHz, 4MB L2 Cache, 128bit vector engine, 64bit chips [08/07 10:10am]

all dual core [08/07 10:10am]

MacPro uses Woodcrest [08/07 10:09am]

Apple says goodbye to the Power Mac line [08/07 10:09am]

Schiller on stage to introduce Mac Pro [08/07 10:09am]

Jobs is talking about last quarter results... strongest Mac shipments in a
13 week quarter, 1.3M macs in total. Mac shares is growing faster than
the idustry rate [08/07 10:07am]

50 percent of new Apple retail store Mac purchases are to people who are
new to the Mac [08/07 10:06am]

1000 Apple engineers will be on site to coach attendees -- that's 1
employee for every 4 attendees [08/07 10:05am]

WWDC has 100 hands on labs [08/07 10:05am]

4200 registered attendees [08/07 10:04am]

The lights in the keynote hall have dimmed... [08/07 10:02am]

The keynote is about to begin. Attendees are being asked to shift to the
center of the seating rows. [08/07 10:02am]
