Not positive why you're trying to avoid using the LAN... but if the devices can take a standard PCI card (or happen to have an extra ethernet port) then probably your best option is to go with a private LAN. You can buy (from Staples) 2 $23 Netgear GigE cards and connect them via private LAN. The cards do full auto-sensing, so IIRC you shouldn't even need a switch or crossover cable.
