The mail command does not support maildir, as far as I know, and
moreover it will look for your mail in /var/spool/mail/$username by
default (or /var/mail/$username, or whatever the default mail spool
file is on your particular flavor of Unix).  I presume you have your
mail being delivered locally by procmail.  You either need to
configure procmail not to deliver to a maildir, or you need to read
mail with something else (like Mutt!) that can handle maildir (and
tell it where your mail is being delivered).
