I think the reason it is not more successful is that it is not 1-for-1 compatible with MS-Office, which is previously extremely prevalent on account of bundling and other forms of aggressive marketing. One thing you have to credit Microsoft for: they know how to sell stuff. For Open Office (or another like it) to truly succeed, I think it needs the backing of a major player who can use some of the same marketing techniques (i.e. bundling the software with stuff that you already want). The only company that seems to me in a position to do something like this is Apple, and "open" is really not their MO. Maybe someone can convince them to bundle OO with iPhone. ;-) -- Derek D.
