computers 1 & 2, both running ubuntu 8.10.

problem 1:
computer 1 logs into computer 2 via ssh -Y.
after login, running evince on pdf file on computer 2 -- it
works but abysmally slowly, accompanied by the following
warning message:

  ** (evince:6277): WARNING **: Failed to create dbus proxy
  for org.gnome.SettingsDaemon: Could not get owner of name
  'org.gnome.SettingsDaemon': no such name
  evince: Fatal IO error 11 (Resource temporarily unavailable)
  on X server localhost:11.0.

how do i fix this?

problem 2.
running open office on computer 2 locally, the following
error messages comes up, but open office doesn't (though it
once did).

  javaldx: Could not find a Java Runtime Environment!

running open office on computer 2 from computer 1 the same error
message comes up and open office runs just fine.  hmmm.

any thoughts?
