latest was 2.6.27-12-generic, so i went back to 2.6.27-9,
which was running on an identical machine, and which did
support the scanner function.  very good, the scanner then
worked.  however, when i again tried 2.6.27-12, the scanner
still worked.  boggles the mind.

couldn't make it work under any kernel.

maybe i'll gain more insight at the installfest.
