the other way around produced tons of output -- but a
successful connection.

did this, and the problem seems solved.  i did notice that
/etc/ssh/sshd_config seemed to be a new addition.  true, i
did not check to see that sshd was running before.

really didn't need to do anything else -- firewall now
running and can still connect.
