it was set in .bash_profile, left over from a long time ago.
i took it out, logged out and back in again -- now unset --
and it made no difference.

could it really be?  javac isn't on the system.  the only
java i see is /usr/bin/java -> /etc/alternatives/java ->
/usr/lib/jvm/jre-1.4.2-gcj/bin/java -> /usr/bin/gij !!
pretty convoluted.  should i be looking to install javac?
