You haven't mentioned trying a clean Thunderbird profile, ie one that
has no existing knowledge of the account.  Some times problems like
this are caused by a corrupted cached message, and that's the quickest
way to get it working again.  Actually figuring out where the problem
is and fixing it can take much longer, though.
