actually, i found neither sndconfig nor
redhat-config-sound, but after more digging did find
system-config-soundcard.  for some reason neither man -k
sound nor man -k config uncovered this.  grepping through
the rpms did.  all is well now.

(will tackle the wireless cards another day.)
