did that, rebooted, all still the same, messages, etc.

lsmod shows these:

ppp_deflate             4504   0 (autoclean)
zlib_deflate           21368   0 (autoclean) [ppp_deflate]
ppp_async               9440   1 (autoclean)
ppp_generic            24444   3 (autoclean) [ppp_deflate ppp_async]
slhc                    6740   1 (autoclean) [ppp_generic]

am i supposed to see ppp-compress-21 anywhere?

i then tried adding:

  alias ppp-compress-21 ppp_deflate

to modules.conf instead of
  alias ppp-compress-21 bsd_comp

and the can't-locate-module messages went away in
/var/log/messages:

Mar  1 11:43:09 alcaid /etc/hotplug/net.agent: assuming ppp0 is already up
Mar  1 11:43:11 alcaid kernel: PPP Deflate Compression module registered

however, still no action.

route showed:

i tried adding default as 209.244.43.215 and got:

which looked somewhat hopeful, and at some point, amidst
my fumbling around, the connection came up, and now seems
to be fine.  thanks for your help.
