ok, did that:
  hub.c: USB new device connect on bus1/1, assigned device number 4
  usb.c: USB device 4 (vend/prod 0x54c/0x10) is not claimed by any
                                                      active driver.

no mention of scsi sda anywhere in dmesg.  (still at rh7.3, tch.)
