There were no serial processes in the output so I'm thinking of just
rebooting the whole system to see if that puts it back in order. I
think it could somehow be permission related, but I'm not sure where or
why. Meaning maybe user 'Greg' is not allowed to write to the device,
or even 'see' it. But if I reboot, then the processes get started by
the correct user and I have permissions again. I won't be able to test
this theory until I can reach a good 'stopping' point to reboot the
machine.<br>

I've pretty much lived paperless for the past 8 months, but now I need
to print more often.<br>

Try stopping cups, and grepping your running processes for "serial". I
have a process "/usr/lib/cups/backend/serial" which sticks around. If I
kill it, and start cups back up, things are fine.
I don't print much, so I haven't tracked down a better solution yet, but
it's worth checking if it's the same issue.
