MPEG is, I think, by far the easiest video format for Linux and Unix users to view... There's a realplayer for Linux but it can be kinda hard to find; many don't bother. There are a wide variety of programs for playing MPEG video on Unix systems, and there are a few for playing some .avi formats (like DivX). Xanim and xmms can both play some QuickTime files (with appropriate plugins or codecs), but not "Sorenson" codec files, which are what most .mov files are these days... My preference would be for mpeg, with RealMedia a fairly close second.
