it seems that i fight this sort of problem at each new
installation and never seem to learn.  however, on my local
network i now have two ibm laptops running rh7.3.  both were
installed with the firewall disabled (yes, i know, not a good
idea, but i'm hopeful my netgear cable router will protect me
to some degree).

the setups are identical (reciprocal addresses, of course) to
the best of my knowledge, but though i can ssh/scp from polaris
to sirius, the reverse is not true:

  sirius:moylan: ~/ ssh polaris
  ssh: connect to address 192.168.0.5 port 22: Connection refused

/proc/net/ip is not present on either machine.  what should i
look for/at?
