Hey, I remember that!  It's worth noting that vi does not actually use
the "escape" key, technically -- it uses the "meta" function.  It just
so happens that "meta" is bound to "escape" on most more recent
systems.  On the DEC stations, it was F11.  :)  I'm a little fuzzy on
the details so if someone has a better explaination...
