This isn't really Dell's fault... When RH6.2 was current, the Adaptec drivers were broken, thanks to the good folks at Adaptec (who insisted they be allowed to take over maintenance of the driver around that time, and immediately set about breaking the thing). Some Linux vendors (like VA Linux) had Linux kernel engineers on their team, and had working kernels for that hardware. I don't know if Dell had a team of Windows driver developers on their staff, but it's a good bet they didn't have Linux device driver developers on their team.
