Well, it depends on what you mean by "real vi" there... Strictly speaking, this isn't true. Nvi is a new implementation of the original vi that does not support a miniscule subset of features of the original vi, and adds quite a few things that the "real vi" has not (like GTK and Tcl support)... It is based on the original BSD sources, but is no longer maintained by UCB. It's probably not even the only clone that's based on the original BSD sources, so I suspect it would be hard to argue that it's any more or less the "real vi" than some others... > Redhat also adds a "vi" alias to the global bashrc that points to > vim, so I also delete that alias. This is only the case if you install the vim-enhanced package, which I don't believe is the case by default unless you chose "Install Everything" at the package selection screen. Also, this is new behavior as of RH 7.2 -- earlier releases of RedHat don't do that. It's actually done in /etc/profile.d/vim.sh, not in /etc/bashrc. You can delete that file or unalias vi, or simply don't install the vim-enhanced package. That'll leave you with vim-minimal, which does not have most of the vim extensions compiled in (no syntax highlighting, etc). There are of course numerous other vi clones out there...
