i've installed lots of pkgs via rpm, and have occasionally run across this. # rpm -q -i -p /mnt/cdrom/RedHat/RPMS/telnet-server-0.17-10.i386.rpm shows . . . install date: (not installed) # rpm -i /mnt/cdrom/RedHat/RPMS/telnet-server-0.17-10.i386.rpm gives . . . package telnet-server-0.17-10 is already installed don't quite understand. however . . . after installing (i guess) telnet-server and xinetd, and starting xinetd from /etc/init.d, telnet works ok. thank you very much. now i need to get rcp to work. all i get now is "connection refused". thanks for all the responses. i did a lot of fumbling, but am happy to have some connectivity. if i can get rcp to work i'll be home free, EXCEPT, of course, for the security issues. will look into ssh as soon as things settle down. re the netgear firewall, i assume it's up and running. haven't done anything to disable it. how do i check? tia, dan
