there's a nifty device called kill-a-watt.  i bought one
from smarthome.com for about $40.

it's a watt hour meter, ammeter, voltmeter, watt meter,
etc...  you plug it in-line with devices you're curious
about and it'll tell you the instantaneous power usage,
cost/month for the device, etc...

it could help you decide how big of an UPS to get, or
if you should be concerned about the load through a single
outlet.
