My preference is actually with the new Microsoft Optical mice (the $29
version, not the silver $60 SUV of mice with umpteen buttons).  For what
it's worth, the increase in mouse resolution is actually noticeable even
when not using the USB connector, and they work well on any surface, along
with having a wheel (which I find indispensible) and a normal number of
buttons.
