Well I have used a HP 35470A SCSI DAT (4mm) tape under
linux 1.2.5. I had to recompile the kernel for
SCSI tape support, but otherwise the tape seems to
work, once I took all the usual SCSI precautions
(proper termination and all ID numbers being different).

I honestly do not know which version of "mt" that is on
the system, though it seems to work OK, so I guess that
it must the SCSI compatible version (anyone have a quick
way of determining the version?).

The real big disadvantage of 4mm DAT drives is the high price,
so one might want to opt for a cheaper drive if people
on this list can give good recommendations.
